Music at St Margaret Pattens
St Margaret Pattens has a great musical tradition. The Choir, the St Margaret Pattens Choir, is always in attendance at Choral Eucharist held on the first Thursday in the month, and occasionally at other special lunchtime and evening services.
Concerts and recitals As well as using music in its Christian worship, the Church holds regular concerts and recitals of classical music (instrumental and choral) and jazz. Sunday, 5th June 2011 at 7.30 p.m. THE ST ANDREWS UNIVERSITY MADRIGAL GROUP with the Amphion Consort The Madrigal Group is formed entirely of students at St Andrews and has played a vibrant part in University life since 1946 (although not with the same members!). This concert is part of the group's two-week summer tour, when they travel the length and breadth of the UK to give a series of concerts with a wide range of repertoire. The group is famous in St Andrews for 'singing in the summer' on May 1st, performing at sunrise on a St Andrews beach as University students plunge into the cold North Sea (part of the University tradition). Dressed in their red University gowns, they perform concerts throughout the academic year. In addition to Elizabethan Madrigals, the group focuses on music from across Renaissance Europe, as well as folk songs, sacred works and even contemporary part-songs. Jelena Makarova is a Russian born Lithuanian pianist based in London who has an established career as a performer, chamber musician and piano teacher. She has appeared in recitals and festivals in the UK, Russia, Sweden and Lithuania and recently in the prestigious Pianists of the World concert series. Mahan Esfahani has received numerous awards for his keyboard artistry and scholarship. In this programme he explores the golden age of Portuguese music-making, including works by the Italian-born Domenico Scarlatti, who was court composer to the ruling Portuguese family and one of the first innovators and pioneers in the history of keyboard music. The Appeal is being launched by the Friends of St Margaret Pattens Church (Registered Charity Number 1062360/0) to raise money for much needed renovation and improvement of the Church. This appeal is for the first phase of £100,000 to include Vestry modernisation and refitting, which will increase the space for entertaining after events such as this concert. Also a sound amplification system in the Church, and the renovation of a seventeenth century Benefactors’ board.
