MUSIC FOR A SUMMER'S EVENING

A concert of music from the court

of Queen Elizabeth I.

  Sunday, 5th June 2011 at 7.30 p.m.

THE ST ANDREWS UNIVERSITY MADRIGAL GROUP

        with the Amphion Consort

The Madrigal Group is formed entirely of students at St Andrews and has played a vibrant part in University life since 1946 (although not with the same members!). This concert is part of the group's two-week summer tour, when they travel the length and breadth of the UK to give a series of concerts with a wide range of repertoire.  The group is famous in St Andrews for 'singing in the summer' on May 1st, performing at sunrise on a St Andrews beach as University students plunge into the cold North Sea (part of the University tradition).  Dressed in their red University gowns, they perform concerts throughout the academic year.  In addition to Elizabethan Madrigals, the group focuses on music from across Renaissance Europe, as well as folk songs, sacred works and even contemporary part-songs.
